You Work For Me

I have to do it. I have to blog about our property management company. Our furnace was OFF all of last night. It was OFF. I woke up at 5am to no flipping heat. This after dealing with these issues all of last week. Here’s my beef. We live in Army housing. If it were my house, that furnace would have been REPLACED last week. We pay over $1700 a month to live here. You’d think we could at least get some heat in February when it’s still winter outside. But no, they screw around with trying to fix our furnace because these houses will eventually be torn down so new ones can be built. They’re currently working on one block of them, and they’ll work their way towards ours as money permits. And you know, I’d take our housing allowance and go find a place out in town, but we moved here in October. Since then, there have been 2 dead bodies and too many armed home robberies to count. This is not a place to live off post. Plus it’s principle. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a house that has working heat. Especially being that we’re in the Mid-Atlantic region. If were in a warmer climate, I could see how they might not see it as such a priority. Last week, we had some of the coldest temperatures we’ve had all winter, and my house had no heat at times. And it’s not the maintenance guys’ faults. They just do what they’re told. So if they’re told to fix it, they do what they can. It comes from higher up.

I’ve had a friend who is a retired Air Force wife tell me I should have my husband call the housing office. He doesn’t have time. And dammit, they work for me too. It shouldn’t come to that. And that’s a whole other issue. I’m so tired of our military family members being treated like second class citizens. Yes, there are some crazy wives out there, but don’t stone wall those of us trying to run our households the right way. And today, they don’t even want me to get my husband on the phone to them. He’s traveling pretty much coast to coast and had to leave our house around 4am to catch his flight. He’ll be even more pleasant than I’m going to be when our housing office opens at 7:30am.

Oh! And that’s another thing. I’m not even bothering to call before they open because they gave us space heaters, knowing our furnace is a piece of crap, so the on call guy won’t bust his butt to get here before they have to be in to work anyway. I’m sure I’m now known as the psycho at (insert our address). You know what? I don’t care.

Some people think we military get our housing for free. We don’t. Some people think it’s luxurious – bwhahahahahaha – it’s far from it. It’s adequate, but I certainly wouldn’t take out a mortgage on any of these houses if they were for sale. I can feel letters to my congressmen coming on as well. Traditionally Democrats are known for their cuts in military spending, and I’m not going to sit back and let that happen with the new administration and a Democratically controlled Congress.

*And just for the record, I’m not a registered Republican bagging on the Democrats.

Vent away sweetie! We don’t get that cold here (its currently still very hot and humid outside and I have air-con on LOL), but I’d be ropeable if it was freezing and they wouldn’t fix the heating properly!
Hope you get it sorted really soon :o )

Aww sweetie I was hoping they’d have this issue fixed by now. The old saying, “the squeeky wheel”, well I often can get stuff done by being the raving bitch. So I say, bitch away.

And while it totally sucks that this is happening, I learned something new today about Army life. See, this is another reason I love your blog.

Sounds like you are going to have to play “demanding shrew” to get anything to happen. I hate being put in that role, don’t you? Seems like heat is pretty much a basic of life that you should not have to beg for in military housing in the U.S. of A.

Hope you can get it resolved to your satisfaction!

I remember Military housing.. not very pleasant. I would start making phone calls, I would call anyone who can listen. Heat is important in FEB!

  6. Jennifer W. says:

I am sorry about your housing troubles. Anyone who rents, and especially from the government, deserves to be treated fairly and be protected by rental laws. Now that is something you can thank Democrats for!

  7. DawnMarch says:

That sounds very aggravating! I sure hope you can get it fixed quick!

  8. Momstart says:

Military are not taken care of at all. I’m not in the military, but I know people that are and you do deserve better. Way Better.

That’s so frustrating. Hello my fridge situation? Not quite as bad being cold in feb.
Hang in there and vent as much as you need.
    Sending you warm thoughts :)

Ugh, that sounds just awful! I hope you can get the situation straightened out soon!

  11. Lora says:

holy crap. first of all, i can’t get past how much you pay a month. you’d be in the lap of luxury in my neighborhood! i’d come over all the time and swim in your indoor pool!

i’m so sorry you are going through all this.

  12. ChefDruck says:

I’m glad you vented. I had no idea that military housing is not free. And it’s a scandal that you’re treated so poorly after all you do for the country.

At least Obama is wired – your blog post has more of a chance of being heard…
