A Week in the Life

This week was crazy! The kids held up surprisingly well through it all. I held up surprisingly well through it all.

-The boys and I all had chiropractic adjustments. I call them attitude adjustments for the boys. It’s amazing how they are after.

-My nutrition consult went OK. I’m just now starting to eat the amount I’m supposed to so my metabolism is up and running. I’m hungry all.the.time. Now if I could only remember to take my multivitamin all the time. Cool side effect – it turns my pee bright yellow.

-The boys got to go to Carrabbas for dinner since my husband had a conference in Atlantic City for a few days. They stayed at the Trump. They had to pay for internet usage. They could however use the gym for free since they’re active duty military. Trump obviously makes his money nickel and diming you at his hotels.

-We got 4 inches of snow and everyone here acted like we were getting a blizzard. The speed limits were reduced on the interstates, there were accidents, people had French Toast Hysteria (running to the store for milk, bread, and eggs), post was put on a delay for the next day before it even started snowing……fun times. Shoveling after the boys went to bed and finishing at 5am before they woke up sucked since DH was in AC for that event.

-Zach complained of arm pain. Went to the doc. Diagnosis: DSi elbow. Doc says not to play games for a couple days. Autistic kid + no games = insane mom.

-Aaron had his neurology consult. He has ADD symptoms. We’re not sure if he’s truly ADD or if it’s from his lack of sleep. Lack of sleep will cause a whole host of symptoms. The child has NEVER slept well. Since his body laughs in the face of melatonin, we’re trying something prescription strength to help him sleep and collect his thoughts. If his symptoms still continue, then he’s ADD. If not, then it was the lack of sleep causing the ADD symptoms. Makes sense. Can you concentrate when you haven’t slept? Poor kid has a 4 year sleep deficit.

-We also had Aaron’s IEP meeting. He can start play group next week. He will get speech and OT. He will be with peers. I will get one morning a week to myself. It’s all good. I’m excited for him. I’m not excited to fill out all the paperwork that accompanies the first day of school.

-I’m looking forward to enjoying the long weekend and maybe relaxing. I might even take the Christmas tree down and put it away. Aaron enjoys the lights, so I haven’t yet.

About Amanda

Amanda Griffiths sometimes feels as though she's running a zoo instead of a home. With two active autistic boys, they often make the noise of six kids. Pepper in some Army life and cyber schooling for spice, and it's organized chaos at best. When visiting, please don't feed the animals. They have food allergies.

  1. I found your blog through the military autism support page, and will be following with interest. My older son (age 3) is diagnosed PDD-NOS. My younger son (almost 2) just qualified for early intervention for “attention issues.” I know there is a connection somewhere between the difficulties both boys face, although onthe surface their challenges appear to be opposite.

I think we will be trying chiropractic care in the near future as well.

  2. Melatonin never worked for us either with my oldest. I’ve tried Calms Forte; works sorta… Valerian much better. Still the oldest is tough; loves to stay up all night. The younger severe kiddo is better with sleep, although has his issues too… lack of sleep is so tough for all.

  3. Rough week for hubs to be away… you poor thing.
Hope everything works out so that you get to have one morning during the week for yourself.
Hang in there, you are doing a great job. :-)
