Infant Tylenol Has a New Cap – So What?

Big deal. Infant Tylenol has a new cap, and they’re using blogs to promote it. From the pictures I see it still has red dye. Red dye made from petroleum and coal. The same red dye that makes it damn near impossible for me to treat my oldest son when he’s sick since he reacts to red dye. Almost every children’s medication OTC and prescription has red dye in it. There’s no need for this. If you let your child eat red dye, you may as well let them lick the Vaseline jar. The FDA allows so many unnecessary additives in our foods, that red dye is where I draw the line because it adversely affects the health of my child.

*Edited to add: Yes, yes, I know there are liquid dye free forms, but they are thick and nasty. They make my kids with texture issues gag. They make me gag giving them to my kids. There was ONE for of store brand ibuprofen I could buy that had red dye free chewables, but I haven’t been able to get those in months. Not to mention, this isn’t something my child will outgrow. Have you seen how many medicines for older children and adults, not to mention prescription medications, that still have red dye in them? There need to be artificially dye free medications across the board.

About Amanda

Amanda Griffiths sometimes feels as though she's running a zoo instead of a home. With two active autistic boys, they often make the noise of six kids. Pepper in some Army life and cyber schooling for spice, and it's organized chaos at best. When visiting, please don't feed the animals. They have food allergies.

  1. Yeah, I don’t get why they need to put the dye in it. It doesn’t affect the flavor or performance. Just unnecessary, unhealthy poisons in products that are supposed to be helpful.

  2. We don’t have any known food allergies here, but it does bother me putting unnecessary chemicals into my kids. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to have a sick kid who you can’t give tylenol to.

  3. I do find the dye helps when you are measuring, but it’s actually really easy to find dye free baby Tylenol and Advil here in Calgary, AB so I never by the dye. Just seems so messy and unnecessary.

    • Which is great if you have a baby. My kids are no longer babies, but I’m sure there are ones out there like my now 9 year old who can’t have red dye. The selection of dye free products is zero for older kids with texture issues. i can either give my 9yo dye free children’s pain reliever, have him gag and puke it, which does nothing, or give him nothing because all of the chewables contain red dye, and he can’t take the adult pills yet. Even a lot of the adult medicines have red dye.

  4. There really should be more options. Surely someone has to have considered those who want a more organic or allergy friendly approach without being nasty and disgusting.

  5. I don’t know if it is the red dye that bothers my little boy, but all I know is that if I give him tylenol he goes absolutely CRAZY. I avoid giving him medication at all costs. The low fever is better than a psycho maniac!

    • One way to test if it’s the dye is to give him something like Hawaiian Punch to see how he reacts. Then you’d know if it’s the dye or the medication. We recently found a dye free version of Zyrtec, thinking it was the dye that made our son go crazy, but it’s the medicine as well. He still went absolutely nuts even with a version with no red in it.

  6. this must be beyond frustrating and I agree, it’s time to stop with the unnecessary chemicals!!

  7. Oh, but Amanda… it makes it look so purdy!! BAH!!!
The drug companies give too much money to the FDA that I don’t think things will EVER change.
Is there a compounding pharmacy that you can use in your area? They should be able to make some meds for your kids without dye.
If not, let me know, I may be able to give you a number but I’m not sure if your insurance will pay for them.

    • I’m looking to see what’s available in my area, and if our insurance would cover it. However, I do think any parent in my same position should be able to walk into any CVS, Walgreens, or any other chain pharmacy and be able to pick up some ibuprofen, cold medicine, etc for their child and not have to jump through hoops to find stuff that’s not full of dyes.

  8. Thank you for posting about the dye. The dye-free is almost always sold out at our store. Think tylenol might take a tip from that, right?

  9. Honestly you would think drug companies would get their acts together and realize that red dye is not important in kids medicines.
