My Family is Odd

I’ve come to find out during the mountains of paperwork that I’ve had to fill out over the years that my family is odd. When people ask for my kids’ names, if I’ve already given our full name, I only give their first name. Then I get asked for their last name. It’s the same. We all have the same last name. The kids have the same parents (although to look at them, strangers wonder). By NOT being a blended family, we’re now weird. An oddity.

I came from a blended family during a time when most people’s parents were married and stayed married (at least until the kids graduated high school). People always got either my last name, or my mother’s wrong because they’re different. They always have been. I guess we were just ahead of our time.

About Amanda

Amanda Griffiths sometimes feels as though she's running a zoo instead of a home. With two active autistic boys, they often make the noise of six kids. Pepper in some Army life and cyber schooling for spice, and it's organized chaos at best. When visiting, please don't feed the animals. They have food allergies.

  1. We are in the same boat as you. Luckily my kids are spitting images of their father. So he can’t claim the milik mans. Really kind of sad if you think about it.

  2. I tried to be in the same boat, but it just didn’t work out that way. When I got divorced, I kept my ex-husband’s last name because I wanted to have the same last name as the boys. Then I met Matt and had Jase. So now we are blended, but everyone who knows my older three still call Jase a “Bunn boy” even though his last name is Pohto and Bunn is my ex-husband’s last name. Now that is odd!

  3. oy, I haven’t really experienced that yet because our kids are so young but I’m sure once we’re into school we will!

  4. I just wrote a post today about the mountains of paperwork, and I didn’t even touch on the whole name thing. I kept my maiden name, which always seems to confuse everyone. Not a blended family, but we still have different names…not the best move on my part.

  5. It is pretty common place to have different names and be blended anymore isn’t it? I had a different last name that my mom and step-dad but not because divorce, but because of death.

  6. You are not odd, just unique, and very lucky.
We are a blended family and it was always confusing when they were in school. It was really a mess at the doctor’s because they were not only covered by their dad’s health insurance, but by their step-dad’s health insureance. And none of the doctors offices could seem to process it right no matter how many times I explained it.
Your boys are very blessed to have you both together and in their corner!

  7. You’re exactly right. I get questioned on my kids last name too. We’re a happily (for the most part…) married couple who stayed together. Go us. :p
