Last night, the warning system was bad. Sure, our cable broke into our TV. Not just the news breaking in, but that gray screen that they do the monthly tests for – yeah, THAT emergency alert screen. Before the storm, I not once heard the tornado sirens in town nor on post. Not once. My husband was outside putting our stuff away, and there were kids outside playing. He told them to get inside there was a tornado warning. They looked at him like he was crazy. I went next door because I could tell they hadn’t prepared at all, and they had no clue. In fact, one of their daughters’ boyfriends was headed right into the worst of it all. People here just didn’t have a clue. This morning, there are now unofficial reports that there was a tornado in our direct area. Without proper warning, if it had been a significant storm, there could’ve been many casualties. I’d hate to see a repeat of what happened back home where I’m from near Albion, PA on May 31, 1985.

Ohhh jeesh. We take it pretty seriously here but we’re in Kansas—I’ve seen one too many town blown off the map recently. But even then when the sirens start blaring there’s always a little part of me that wants to go outside and investigate…

We don’t normally have them here, but lately that’s changing. This week we had our second tornado *warning*. We’re not used to this sort of thing. In fact, there are no sirens or break ins on tv. At least I haven’t seen or heard them yet. I have to stay glued to weather.com which can change at any second.
Last night they were pathetic at warning us of a severe storm. It hit almost out of nowhere, it seemed. That kind of reporting will definitely end up in terrible tragedy.
I’m glad you’re all safe!

I couldn’t watch the video. I cry way too easily these days. I could not imagine relying on sirens that don’t go off. We don’t have sirens where I live. Heck we have been under a tornado watch before and you wouldn’t know it if you weren’t watching the weather channel.

The part I find the oddest of all, while the sirens never sounded in your area for a tornado warning, they go off in my area when we have thunderstorms or wind.

I can’t believe they didn’t sound the sirens. That’s fricken nutso!
This is really awful. I don’t know how they could let the ball drop so badly with something that is so very important.

That happened to us on the very same day. We’re in the middle of nowhere so there wouldn’t have been any sirens anyway. Nothing came on the tv either. The only warning we had was the wall of rain heading for us at an unbelievable rate.
