Please, for the love of all that is holy, please, friends, family, and strangers, stop saying you can’t tell when it comes up about the boys being on the autism spectrum. Do you know why you can’t tell? It’s because our lives are one big behavioral therapy session and have been since our oldest was 3 1/2 (That’s 6 1/2 years if you’re counting). You can’t tell because the routines of our day, and the intricate logistical planning that goes into a family outing make it possible. You can’t tell because each child has a team of professionals that work with us to help us shape and mold them into what we hope will be happy and productive citizens when they come of age.
When the boys do tantrum? Please don’t tell me all kids do that. When the boys are acting out because they’re having sensory issues, please don’t tell me they’re boys being boys. I understand that not everything they do is autism related, but a good portion of it is. Their brains just are wired like everyone else’s. No matter how much you wish them to be the same, they are precious and different. The sooner you accept these differences, the easier we will all get along.

Oh My Gd! Totally!! It’s kinda degrading, actually. Plus, it completely invalidates our concerns and our knowledge as moms of our own freaking children’s behaviors. We’re right. They’re wrong.
Hey, I just grabbed your button! Putting it on my blogroll page!
yesyesyesyesyes. That’s the crap of autism, along with all the sensory issues, it doesn’t LOOK like anything is different.
Aw shit…I’m almost positive I’ve said that to someone at some point
OM! This is exactly what I needed. YES! YES! YES!
Ha, well said! I had a pediatrician try to discredit both my kids diagnosis’s basically stating “all kids do that sometimes”… I refuse to see that Dr. again.

YES. There are few things that make me angrier when people do that.
I feel you. When we are out and Joshua has an episode, people say “it is just the age.” Um, no it’s not!
I really hate that sentence. Really. I feel like slapping people when they say that.
