Food Nasties

If you think the kitchen cleanliness is your biggest worry when eating out, think again. While researching allergen information on local restaurants to maybe expand where we can eat with our 5yo’s food allergies, and to make traveling easier, I found a wealth of ick. It’s no wonder I’ve been having GI issues after eating out. Seemingly innocuous food is really pretty nasty for you. And here I thought my biggest problem was going to be to find places that don’t fry shrimp and fries in the same oil.

-Bob Evans uses a lot of MSG.

-Nitrates/nitrites are part of the cold cut hoagie territory, but sulfites in the steak, Subway? Gross.

-Quiznos, Quiznos, Quiznos. No wonder I was hooked on your mesquite chicken hoagie. It was full of processed crap to make it taste like it was laced with crack.

-Denny’s has MSG, sulfites, and their pancake mix is made on equipment with tree nuts, so that makes them out for us now too.

-Pizza Hut pizza sauce may contain shellfish. WTF?

These are just what I found that I wasn’t aware of. What allergen information have you found about some of the restaurants where your family has eaten? What are some allergy friendly places that you enjoy a family meal out?

About Amanda

Amanda Griffiths sometimes feels as though she's running a zoo instead of a home. With two active autistic boys, they often make the noise of six kids. Pepper in some Army life and cyber schooling for spice, and it's organized chaos at best. When visiting, please don't feed the animals. They have food allergies.

  1. I’d like to say it’s unbelievable but it’s not really. This stuff just makes me really sad. There isn’t really any place to eat outside our homes.

  2. I used to really like Quiznos. So much for that.

Looking at this list, and seeing all the associated food sensitivities, sets me thinking about my kids and their frequent stomachaches. Maybe another avenue to investigate. Hmm.

  3. Some friends and I drove to Kentucky a few years ago to go rock-climbing. I hadn’t been out of NYC in awhile, and couldn’t believe the dismal options on the road. It was all McDonalds, Cracker Barrel and Taco Bell.
I couldn’t believe my dumb luck when we discovered a Panera’s in West Virginia somewhere. I haven’t looked too deeply into their food prep, but it seems fairly wholesome.
Most shocking of all was on the drive back. At a restaurant in western Pennsylvania the hostess asked us a question none of had heard in a decade: Smoking or Non?

  4. AMC popcorn is popped in Coconut oil.
Hot Chocolate mix (all that I have looked at) is made with coconut oil.
Really, coconut oil is in a lot of things I never thought it was in – chocolate in ice cream, chocolate chip cookie special K bars…

At least my reaction with coconut isn’t that bad. :/
