My First Car

I’m really glad the Monday Mojo linky runs all week. Visit Eclectic Six Media for the details, and don’t forget to stop by tomorrow for the new topic! That linky will run all week as well, so don’t panic if your Monday is already full of mojo.

This weeks topic:

Tell us about your first car. Everyone remembers their first car (I hope) and has a story or two to tell about it. So share yours.

I didn’t get my first car until after I was married and had a baby. We had determined that I needed to try and find a job outside the home to help us get through the month with expenses. I succeeded in finding a job, with good hours, and I found some pretty awesome day care for our oldest son who was 15 months old at the time. The problem was I needed a car. We only had one car, and there just wasn’t a job that I could physically do with my fibromyalgia where the hours worked around my husband’s schedule.

My first car wasn’t anything great, but it did its job. I got a Saturn SL2 sedan. It was pretty reliable and got us around where we needed to go. My biggest complaint was that it didn’t have automatic anything. I think I’m pretty lucky it had a CD player and cruise control. I hated having to manually unlock the doors in the rain and snow with a small child, but it was what we could afford. It was more about affordability than convenience.

In the end, I’m glad we got a second car and didn’t try to make one car work. Having two cars allowed us to take advantage of the opportunities we did, and get us where we are today.

About Amanda

Amanda Griffiths sometimes feels as though she's running a zoo instead of a home. With two active autistic boys, they often make the noise of six kids. Pepper in some Army life and cyber schooling for spice, and it's organized chaos at best. When visiting, please don't feed the animals. They have food allergies.

  1. I can’t believe you didn’t get a car till you were married! that’s wild to me especially here in SoCal everyone drives everywhere so everyone has a car in high school.

    • I was never in a financial position to pay for one before that. I was pretty much paying for everything myself as soon as I got a job. It was hard to save any money for a car and insurance when I was paying for my school lunches, clothes, etc. I figured if my mom and stepdad were going to make me have a job and pay for all my own stuff, even necessities, then they could either let me use one of their cars or drive me to work. Once I moved out and went to college, I didn’t go back home to live.
