Mamarazzi Monday – 4th of July Edition

How did you spend the 4th of July? We spent it in the ER Friday and Sunday. Friday, Aaron took a header down about 5 stairs and used his face as a landing pad. Sunday Zach was presenting as possible appendicitis. After 6 hours of tests, it was determined it’s just a really nasty virus at this point, and I need to watch him the next couple days. Instructions were to come back if he gets worse or see our regular doc if he’s not better in a couple days.

Aaron was running around Zach’s ER room about 10pm trying to stay awake after I said, “No running,” ran into the linen basket and gave himself this black eye.

Wordless Wednesday – Family History Edition

This is a picture from the Confederate camp at the Army Heritage and Education Center. It was part of their Armed Forces Day event. This particular area sparked a good discussion about our family history. I was able to impart to our 8 year old son about how his great-great-great grand father was captured by Confederate soldiers and then sent to Andersonville. He was one of the few who actually made it home after being held captive at Andersonville.

What’s Creepier, a Clown or a Sock Monkey?

Weren’t the clowns in the jack in the boxes creepy enough? Sheesh. I had a sock monkey as a kid and I hated it. It scared me until I was school age. Now they have these traumatizing our kids one nostalgic toy at a time:

Mother’s Day Canvas for Deployed Soldiers

I got my latest edition of Woman’s Day magazine yesterday, and saw an awesome deal for deployed soldiers who don’t know what to get their moms for Mother’s Day. Get her a canvas print! Canvas on Demand is offering a free 16×20 canvas to any mom of a deployed soldier ($112 value). The solider needs to register for “Operation Hi Mom!” and upload a photo at Canvas on Demand.

I will say that their canvasses come out awesome. I have two of them, one for each boy, and I sent my sister one of her little girl as a Christmas gift last year.

Who Do You Think You Are?

Have you watched the show Who Do You Think You Are? My husband and I have watched it the last two weeks now. It’s fascinating. Of course I’m semi-geeky and think family history is fascinating. I spent many years middle school through college researching my family tree online and in various courthouses and libraries. Then I had kids and it was just too time consuming to do both.

We traced my mom’s parents pretty much back to the people who came over from Europe. Both sides of her family have been here for many MANY generations. We got grandpa’s one branch back to the 1600′s. We have ancestors who came over with the French army to help during the American Revolution and fought under Generals Washington and Lafayette. We have relatives on both sides of the Civil War, one having been a prisoner and survived Andersonville. We lost family in a flu epidemic in 1919. We have ministers, moonshine runners, farmers, a post master, and many more professions. This is just my maternal grandfather’s family. No other branch has proven to be as interesting. What made it fun to research is as far as we can tell, Grandpa’s family stayed in the southwestern Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and the southeastern side of Ohio.

My maternal grandmother’s side from what I’ve found pretty much came over from Germany and England in the 1800′s and settled in Northeastern Ohio and stayed there. Most of our relatives from this branch are still there today.

My dad’s family is relatively new to this country. No one on my dad’s side really knows much about the family in general. They’re an odd and dysfunctional bunch. What little I know I took from the information listed in my grandparents’ obituaries. From what I can tell, my paternal grandfather’s grandparents came from Germany, and my paternal grandmother’s parents or grandparents came from Ireland.

It’s interesting if you get the chance to see where your family has come from. It also gives you some insight into some traditions your family may have or attitudes you’ve seen.

Christmas Cards

I’m so very very behind on these this year. Some of you will be getting this in the mail – eventually. My grand plan for getting to the post office Saturday was thwarted by the snow. We got over eight inches here, and that was enough to keep everyone digging out until yesterday. Here is the Christmas card I made this year for all our friends and family.
I wish I could’ve gotten a better picture of their jerseys and/or hats, but with all the outtakes, I’ll take what I can get where they’re both looking at the camera and smiling.

Breakfast with Santa – 2009

I really hope my kids grow up to appreciate breakfast with Santa on these early Saturday mornings in December when they’re older. It’s hell for us adults. Although it would be a lot better if it weren’t for the general lack of parenting. I saw one kid kicking his mom while in line to see Santa, and all she did was say in a an almost sing-song voice “Do you think that’s a good choice?” I showed my husband the receipt for our tickets and said “This is what Hell costs.” LOL.

This is where they hold the breakfast at Wegman’s. Next year I really think they should offer beer sales during the breakfast. Just a suggestion since it’s there and all.

Picture Challenge

I was challenged by Not So Average Mama to find the 10th picture in my 10th folder and post it. I admit I had to look at the exif data on the photo so see when it had been taken. This picture was taken in May 2008. Seeing the date brought back the memories. We had gone to the park before my husband had to go to work for a couple hours. They had commissioning that day. I can’t believe how little Aaron is in the picture compared to how gigantic he is now.

As for the rules, I’m going to cheat a little. I just tagged a bunch of people with blog awards yesterday, so I won’t bombard more people today.
