The End of a Chapter
Today John Allen Muhammad will be put to death as the mastermind behind the DC Sniper case. I still remember those three weeks in the fall of 2002. I had just started a new job a month prior. Even though we lived about an hour and a half outside DC, everyone was on the lookout for the white van or box truck that the shooter was supposedly using as transportation. We all feared for our friends and neighbors who worked in DC.
Then on October 24, 2002 John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo were arrested at a rest area just 9 miles from our house in western Maryland. The entire region breathed a collective sigh of relief. Then more details came out as the case was built against the duo. Waitresses and shop owners in our town had served the pair. There was a picture of a small gas station not to far from the prison complex and armory on their laptop – a possible intended target in our area.
I remember the anxiety I felt finding out how close they had been to where my family lived, worked, and played. I can’t imagine how the families of the victims felt then and feel now. I’m glad justice is being served today.

It had to be horrendous to live in that area when that was going on! I understand your feelings completely. Stay safe…
I cannot imagine how you felt living so close to that horrible situation! I'm glad you received your justice. I know that it will never bring back the people lost, but I hope it helps those left behind find some peace.
