The State of Education

[ 5 ] September 12, 2008 | Amanda

I don’t know about your schools, but the one my son is currently attending is absolutely appalling. There was no mention at all yesterday of 9-11 in his class. He had no idea what yesterday was other than the fact that we talked about it at home. That’s like not talking about the Civil War. I understand he’s only in 2nd grade, but come on people. But really, should I be surprised? No.

This is the same school where all the emergency exits were chained during last year’s Christmas Concert (are you as shocked as I am they still call it that? But not in a bad way). Oh, and let’s not forget the high school kids that were taunting the 1st graders at recess last years and my son was the one who got in trouble for losing his temper and getting mad at the bigger kids.

My son has been to the Principal’s office twice this year already, for stupid issues in my opinion, and have I received a phone call? Nope. Not one. You know what my son took away from his last encounter with the principal? That he needs to get a better attitude. He really didn’t even understand why he was even there. I had to do the teacher and the Principal’s jobs and explain to him what he’d done wrong and why he’d been sent there and we worked on what he could do better next time. And these are people that supposedly have degrees? Come on people. I’m sure I’m not much help with the poor attitude that he’s only got a couple more weeks until we move.

I’m not the only disgruntled parent, but until all the other ones start spouting off as much as I do and making their voices heard, nothing will change. This school district will remain one where they post on their school homepage in almost a congratulatory manner that they met the improvement levels for No Child Left Behind, and our 9th-12th graders scored 56% in math and 63% in reading. Not exactly numbers I’d boast about.

Ok, ok, off my soapbox about education for today. It’s Friday after all. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
